For the benefit of Nick, a repost of the Sideburn instructions and, ahem, deadline:

Sideburn #1

Gentlemen, start yer engines. The first Sideburn is gonna be a wee thing -- a skinny bit of facial hair as opposed to a mutton chop -- since there's only 3 of us: Shamus, Nick, and me. That's okay, though -- something small to kick things off.

Mindful of Nick's griping about me choosing the theme, this morning I decided to generate one randomly. Before presenting the theme let me outline the methodologies that led to its creation.

First, a random URL generator was used, which kicked out a webpage devoted to "time travel." Then, the phrase "time travel" was used as search criteria in the quotations section of Bartleby.com. This produced 20 results. A random number generator was used to produce an integer between 1 and 20. It gave 17. The 17th result from the Bartleby search was a quotation from the poet Robert Graves. Note that it has nothing to do with "time travel" per se, but contains the word "travel" and was published in Time Magazine:

I believe that every English poet should read the English classics, master the rules of grammar before he attempts to bend or break them, travel abroad, experience the horror of sordid passion and—if he is lucky enough—know the love of an honest woman.

At this point I decided to chuck randomness and extract the part of the quotation that appealed most to me. Thus, sideburners, your theme is:

EXPERIENCE THE HORROR OF SORDID PASSION

You have until Aug 29 to mail it out. Let the burning begin!
I just noticed that today is the mail-out deadline for Sideburn 1. I just received Korak's mix yesterday (no, he didn't actually mail it to me), so Nicky-Baby, you're all that's left.

Jiminey, your side burn kicks ass, and the web page is well, I am censoring what I would have called it. Just know that I really like it alot.
It's *WAY* better than Koraks.

8/27/2003

Jim, you really do great Web work- excellent Sideburn page. I've corrected the template, however, to read "horror," instead of "horrors."
Here it is CK, the song list for two of the sideburns anyhow.

8/26/2003

Damn you guys are making this lazy regular (sideburn free) burner suffer with all your tales of the delights of the horrors of sordid passion. James, can you put the contents of the sideburns on the webpage?

burning with curiousity,

ck
Note to James: I LOVE the Calgon Special Edition #2. Just might be my favorite mixed-Cd of the year. Thank you.

8/25/2003

James, what's up with the bunny-ear imagery on your SideBurn?

8/20/2003

By the way did anyone receive my Sordid Disc yet?

8/19/2003

Well I gave Mel's disc a listen and I have to say that I loved it. A very sordid collection of songs. In fact you should have included some kleenex with the thing. The Miss Kitten song in particular captured the horrors of sordid passion. Nice touch ending it with Just One of Those Things. I'm not sure that I get the "Me & Yoko Ono" song though.
Gave MDM's Burn a listen (oh, and mine was *purple* -- eat your heart out jiminey) and i have to say I really like it. So much so that I am stealing the ideas for my sordid burn.

So much for being an overachiever, eh Melly? who knew?! who knew?!
xxxooo
Em's Sordid package arrived in the mail today. I am just about to pop it into the cd slot in my imac and let it spin. The playlist look very alluring (in a sordid way of course). I love it, from the blue tinted case to the gel ink cover it all is very attractive.

8/15/2003

Nick, Shamus, Korak: Your Sideburn of Sordid Passion is on the way.

cheers

shot.

What's the policy on oweing NEA a CD when he joined after my burn month? Anyway I'm so sure he'll love it I'm going to send him a copy along with The Sordid Passion burn. I finished the covers today and will drop them in the mail tomorrow.
No, I have not received Kerry's July CD. What Month is this? August? Hrm... I *did* get
KBs!
Bravo, Kenneth! I think you win the "most prompt" award in the ring! I got your CD in the mail on Saturday, the 9th, and am loving the music. Clever theme, and nice change of vibe.

And has everyone received Kerry's July CD by now?

Kerry, can I have a copy too?

Kerry's disc Transient Music arrived this morning and I've just popped it in the computer to accompany me through my work day. It doesn't seem to be music about hobos. By the way the artwork is very nice and has a real personal feel to it.
